His body was recovered from a river hours after a fatal clash
A councillor candidate in Jhenaidah was found dead early on Thursday five hours after a clash between his supporters and a rival candidate left another dead in the district’s Shailkupa upazila.
The body of councilor aspirant Alamgir Hossain Babu was recovered from Kumar River around 2am, said police.
Earlier in the day, a clash broke out between supporters of Babu and candidate Shawakt Ali, which left Ali’s brother Liakat dead.
Witnesses said the supporters of councillor candidates in ward-8 of Shailakupa engaged in a clash while campaigning in Kabirpur around 7pm.
The skirmish left five people injured. Liakat was rushed to Kushtia Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to knife injuries sustained during the clash.
Meanwhile, police have yet to determine the cause of Alamgir’s death. “We’ll know the cause of death after the autopsy,” Shailkupa police station Officer-in-Charge Jahangir Alam said.
The two murders have caused extreme anxiety and panic among the citizens and voters of Shailkupa municipality. Police have been deployed throughout the municipal area to avoid further clashes.
