The woman and the child had been locked up by their landlord because she failed to pay house rent
A mother along with her child was reportedly locked up by her landlord in Harinatana area under Bianibazar of Khulna city for five days for unpaid house rent.
Aziza Tasmia, the six-month old child of the mother, died on Monday after drowning in the water of a bucket while she was busy with household chores.
During this period, the husband of the woman Imdadul Islam, a carpenter, was busy at work in Mongla.
According to sources, Tamanna, mother of the child, and her husband took two rooms of the house on rent in the area owned by Md Naosher in December.
On January 6, the landlord demanded the house rent of January, Tk4,000, from Tamanna.
At one stage, he locked the door, with the woman and her child inside, as she failed to pay the money.
Local UP member Shahidul Islam said the mother started to scream when her child was close to death. Locals rescued them after breaking down the door.
The child died on the way to hospital, said Shahidul.
Labonchora police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Samir Kumar said he had heard the news.
He claimed the negligence of the mother for the tragic death of the child.
Advocate Mominul Islam said a written complaint was given to the police but it was not filed.
A complaint will be filed with the court on Thursday in this regard, he added.
