5 receive Begum Rokeya Padak

The award recognizes the pioneering contribution of an individual in empowering women and raising women's issues

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has handed over the prestigious Begum Rokeya Padak to five persons for their outstanding contributions towards society, women education and women empowerment.

Sheikh Hasina distributed the Padak at a program at Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium on Wednesday, marking the 140th birth and 88th death anniversary of Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain.

In 2020, Prof Dr Shireen Akhter in education, Brig Dr Nazma Begum in women’s emancipation, Monjulika Chakma in socio-economic development, Begum Mushtari Shafi in literature and culture, and Farida Akter in women’s rights categories, have been selected for the prestigious award.

The Ministry of Children and Women Affairs organized the event.

The prime minister joined the event virtually from her official residence Ganobhaban.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira, on the prime minister's behalf, physically handed over the awards, medals and cheques to the awardees.

The Begum Rokeya Padak, named after Begum Rokeya, is a Bangladeshi national honour conferred on individual women for their exceptional achievements. 

The award, given by the Ministry of Women & Children Affairs, recognizes the pioneering contribution of an individual in empowering women and raising women's issues.
