Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to virtually join the award giving ceremony, which will mark Begum Rokeya Day 2020 on Wednesday

Five prominent female personalities will be honoured with the Begum Rokeya 2020 award for their outstanding contributions in society and women empowerment

This year, Dr Shireen Akhter in education, Col Dr Nazma Begum in women’s emancipation, Monjulika Chakma in socio-economic development, Begum Mushtari Shafi in literature and culture, and Farida Akter in women’s rights categories, have been selected for the prestigious award.

The award ceremony, to mark Begum Rokeya Day 2020 (her 140th birth and 88th death anniversary), will be held at the Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium at 10pm on Wednesday.

As in earlier years, the Ministry of Children and Women Affairs will organize the event.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will virtually join the event. State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira, on the premier’s behalf, will physically hand over the awards, medals and cheques to the awardees or their representatives.

Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, today issued separate messages on the occasion of Begum Rokeya Day 2020, paying rich tributes to the memory of Begum Rokeya.

Different government, private, socio-cultural and political organizations have taken up elaborate programs, including prayer sessions, placing wreaths on her portraits, discussions and cultural functions to observe the day.

The government introduced the Begum Rokeya Padak in 1995, which is conferred on five eminent women every year, in recognition of their remarkable contributions to the empowerment of women and highlighting of women’s issues in society.

Begum Rokeya was a Bengali feminist thinker, writer, educationist and social activist, widely regarded as the pioneer of women’s education in the Indian subcontinent during the period of British rule.
