A member of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was killed in a reported shootout with Bangladesh Army at Naniarchar upazila in Rangamati.
The incident took place in the upazila’s 19 Mile area at around 2pm on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Sajek Chakma alias Nayan, 35.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Naniarchar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sabbir Hossain said: “Informed about UPDF men extorting money from local shops, a patrol team of the army responded to the scene at the upazila’s 19 Mile area.
“Seeing the army personnel arrive, the UPDF men opened fire at them. The victim Sajek was killed in return fire when the army retaliated.”
“Two guns, six bullets, and money were recovered from the spot,” said the OC adding, “The body of the deceased has been sent for autopsy.”
