The court examined ten witnesses and other documents before pronouncing the verdict
A Barisal court has sentenced a man to death for killing a schoolgirl after rape almost two years ago.
Abu Shamim Azad, judge of the Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal, delivered the judgment in the presence of the lone accused Abul Kalam Azad Kalu, 35, on Thursday afternoon.
The court examined ten witnesses and other documents before pronouncing the verdict.
Acknowledging the facts, Advocate Faizul Huq, a special public prosecutor of the court, said: “The deceased, Shima Aktar, 8, was a third-grader at a local primary school. She went to the house of her neighbour, the convict Abul Kalam Azad, to use his washroom on March 11, 2018.”
“Confining the little girl at his house, Kalu raped and later strangled her to death.”
He then secretly buried her dead body in a local graveyard. However, locals informed the police after sensing a bad smell from the site on March 13, 2018, added the prosecutor.
After a case was filed with Airport police station, police arrested Kalu, who made a confessional statement under Section 164 of CrPC before the court on March 14 that year.
Inspector Abdur Rahman Mukul, the investigating officer of the case, filed a charge sheet against the accused on September 30, 2018, and the court framed charges against the accused on January 20, 2019, the case statement says.
