The 24-year-old suddenly left her sister’s place in Dhaka and went to her village home in Comilla without informing anyone on Monday night
A university student has reportedly committed suicide by jumping off an under-construction nine-storey building in Comilla.
The incident occurred in Comilla’s Jhautola area, behind the office of Comilla City Corporation’s Ward No 10 Office, around 1:30pm on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Jannatul Hasin, 24, confirmed Comilla Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwarul Haque on Tuesday.
He said: “We are suspecting that it is a case of suicide as the girl died after falling from the roof of an under-construction multi-storey building. The body of the deceased has been sent for autopsy. The cause of death will be determined upon receiving the report.”
According to family members, Hasin, who had recently graduated from Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) and was doing her internship at a private bank, lived with her sister and her husband in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.
The 24-year-old, on Monday night, suddenly left her sister’s place in Dhaka and went to her village home in Comilla without informing anyone.
At around 1:30pm on Tuesday, she told her parents that she was going out to buy some shampoo. She then went to a nearby under-construction multi-storey building and jumped off of its top floor. Hasin died on the spot.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Idris Mehedi, father of the deceased, said: “Hasin lived with my eldest daughter and her husband in Mirpur 6. She came to Comilla without telling anyone. She was angry about something. She didn’t even eat anything on Monday night.”
“I don’t know if she was in a relationship with someone,” Mehedi said, adding that he is not aware of his daughter being involved in any conflict with anyone.
Comilla City Corporation Ward No 10 Councillor Manzoor Quader Moni said: "We were working inside the office when we heard a loud noise. Curious, we went outside and saw a girl lying on the ground. She died on the spot.”
"We, after watching the CCTV footage of the area, have been able to confirm that the girl jumped off the roof of the adjacent nine-storey under-construction building,” the councillor added.
