Lalmonirhat Lynching: Muezzin arrested over alleged involvement

The suspect has been accused of being present at the scene since the beginning of the incident

Afaz Uddin, 60, muezzin of Burimari Central Jame Mosque, has been arrested over the murder of Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel.

A joint team of Patgram police and Lalmonirhat Detective Branch of Police arrested the suspect during a police drive in Burimari upazila of Kurigram Thursday night. 

The suspect has been accused of being present at the scene since the beginning of the incident, confirmed Patgram police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sumon Kumar Mohonto.

He said: “Afaz has been shown arrested in the murder case filed over the death of Jewel in mob lynching October 29. The arrestee has been sent to Lalmonirhat where he will be produced before a court Saturday.”

There have been three separate cases filed over the incident. Police have arrested 33 people so far. Ten suspects were remanded, three of them gave confessional statements in the court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

On October 29, Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel, 50, was beaten to death and his body was torched by an angry mob on the Burimari Union Parishad premises in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat district.
