They were planning to carry out subversive anti-state activities
Police have detained seven activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, along with weapons, computers, and jihadi books in Bogra.
They were detained from a dormitory in the Maltinagar cremation ground area of the city on Tuesday night.
The arrestees are Shibir Maltinagar sub-branch president Mehedi Hasan, 26, Shibir Madrasa affairs secretary Yusuf Ali, 26, Asadul Al Galif, 24, Shaheen Alam, 24, Zia Alam, 25, Golam Mortuza, 27, and Abdul Quddus, 25.
Sadar police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sajjadul Islam filed a case against them under the 2009 Anti-Terrorism Act on Wednesday.
Sadar police station Officer in-Charge (OC) Humayun Kabir confirmed the matter and said the arrestees were sent to the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Billal Hussain in the afternoon and remanded for five days.
According to the OC, the Shibir men were holding a meeting at Tota Mia hostel in Maltinagar cremation ground area of Bogra city to overthrow the government and carry out subversive anti-state activities. Tipped off, police raided their dormitory around 11pm on Tuesday.
Sensing the presence of the police, some of the men managed to flee but seven were arrested. A search of the dormitory turned up a large number of jihadi books, computers, laptops, sticks dipped in kerosene oil, and two chapatis.
