Households of 5,000 people have fallen under threat due to unabated lifting of sand in Pakulla union of Bogra's Sonatala upazila.
"A large hole has been developed at Mirzapur area of the union due to sand lifting from the Jamuna River. The nearby areas may get devoured anytime," said Masud Ahmed, an agriculture officer of the upazila.
Locals said due to the illegal sand lifting by a sand trader one Minarul Islam, vast tracts of land that harbours a hundred-year-old mosque, many households and a flood control embankment have fallen under threat.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sadia Afrin said none has informed her of the matter. "The incident will be investigated. If necessary, mobile courts will be conducted to take actions against the people responsible.
