With a view to create awareness about saving the Karnaphuli River from pollution and illegal grabbing, a sampan (boat) procession was brought out in the river in Chittagong on Friday.

While inaugurating the rally at 10:30am, AL’s Chittagong city chapter president (acting) Mahtab Udin Chowdhury said that the whole country would be at stake if Karnaphuli River was polluted and grabbed further.
“Chittagong Port Authority must ensure that the lifeline of Chittagong is free from pollution and illegal grabbing,” Mahtab said.
Former city mayor and AL’s Chittagong city unit general secretary AJM Nasir said the port activities would come to a halt if the river dies due to pollution and encroachment.
“Therefore, Chittagong Port Authority must shoulder all the responsibilities to save the river,” Nasir said.
Over 200 boats participated in the procession from Abhoymitra Ghat of the river being imbued with the slogan ‘Bangladesh will be saved if the Karnaphuli River is saved’.
The speakers at the rally at Abhoymitra Ghat following the procession also urged the government to take necessary steps to save the Karnaphuli
A sampan khela (boat game) and rendition of local songs will be held at Abhoymitra Ghat of the river in the city on Saturday.
