A madrasa teacher has been arrested for chaining and torturing a student in Pabna.
The survivor, Mubarak Hossain, 11, a student of noorani department at the Kudimpara Bura Dewan Noorani Hafizia madrasa in Sahapur union, Ishwardi upazila, Pabna, was tortured both physically and mentally for three days.
Following the ordeal, Nazrul Islam, the father of the child victim, filed a case against Piyarul Islam, a teacher at the institution, on Saturday afternoon.
Piyarul Islam was arrested over the case shortly afterwards. A court sent him to jail on Sunday afternoon.
Sheikh Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ishwardi police station, confirmed the matter.
Since his admission, Mubarak often endured beatings at the madrasa. At one point, fearing another beating, he fled to his aunt’s house. However, his relatives returned him to the institution.
Supposedly in an act of retaliation for his attempted escape, Mubarak was chained to an iron chair and subjected to physical and mental torture by Piyarul Islam starting Wednesday. The ordeal even included an incident where the teacher spat on the ground and forced Mubarak to lick it off.
During the Jumma prayers on Friday, Mubarak seized an opportunity to flee once more from the madrasa.
Learning of his plight, locals informed police who rescued the child soon after.
