Raids on to catch the two other accused, police say
Police in Habiganj have arrested one Saiful Islam in a case filed over the gang rape of a woman in the district’s Nabiganj upazila on Sunday.
The 27-year-old, the second accused in the case, was captured from Minajpur village under the upazila’s Aushkandi union around 10pm on Tuesday, confirmed Nabiganj police OC Azizur Rahman.
Since the woman filed the rape case against three men on Monday night, he said, several police teams raided a number of villages under the union.
Saiful was arrested during one of those raids, OC Azizur said. He declined to reveal the names of the other two accused for the sake of the investigation.
“These criminals will manage to flee if we divulge who they are to the media now,” he said, adding they were continuing raids to catch them.
According to case details, the woman was going to Majlishpur from Sherpur on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Sunday night. Rather than dropping her off at Majlishpur, the vehicle driver took her to different places after gagging her and tying up her limbs.
She was later gang-raped in an abandoned building in Aushkandi by several men. After taking turns in violating her all night, they sent her on a three-wheeler to a relative's house the next morning.
Later, some local influential individuals allegedly tried to cover-up the incident through an arbitration. When news of the incident spread, police went to the spot and rescued the rape survivor.
