A teenage Buddhist girl with a disability was reportedly raped in Barura upazila of Comilla.
Following the incident, a group of influential locals allegedly tried to help the accused evade justice by taking compensation money from him and offering it to the girl’s father at a village arbitration.
The village arbitrators allegedly siphoned Tk2 lakh out of the accused and made the girl’s father sign a blank stamp paper assuring him compensation which they pocketed themselves.
Finally, the girl’s father filed a case against one Imam Hossain, the alleged rapist, with Barura police station Monday night.
While police say they will take action against the arbitrators once they receive specific complaints in this regard.
As of writing this report on Wednesday, police are yet to arrest the accused.
According to the case statement, Imam Hossain, a resident of Lagnasar, managed to rape the girl of the same village at her home on multiple occasions previously on account of her disability.
On Saturday, when Imam tried to rape the girl again, her father saw him and tried to catch him before he ran away.
The girl’s father said: “A number of influential locals arranged an arbitration Saturday night. They offered compensation and took my signature on a blank piece of stamp paper. But, I was deceived.”
Speaking on the matter, Iqbal Bahar, inspector of Barura police station, said: “Police are trying to arrest one Imam Hossain for rape charges pressed against him.”
Barura police station OC Satiyajit Barua said anyone involved in obstruction of justice and settling the matter of rape outside of the law will also be punished.
