Hundreds of tourists visit Patadhoya Beel (water body) at this time of year to enjoy this stretch of open water covered with magnificent red and white lotuses.
With beautiful lotuses blooming abundantly from August to September during the rainy season, the beel near Neel Kuthi in Sadar union of Rowmari upazila in Kurigram is a most fascinating tourist destination in the district.
The natural water body covers almost 10 acres. The area also has some special attractions like aquatic trees, said locals.
Hundreds of visitors including students from across the region come to enjoy the beauty of the wetland, with flowers blooming on the beel, indeed a captivating sight. Visitors can hire a local boat to enjoy the scenic beauty of the beel adorned with heavenly lotuses.
Masud Rana and Anis, two local journalists, say thousands of red and white lotuses bloom every year during the rainy season. Locals and tourists from different areas of the country come to enjoy the scenic beauty of the beel.
They said there is a road in the middle of the beel that becomes inundated during the rainy season. If the road is made higher and seats are arranged there, visitors can more easily enjoy the beauty of the beel at leisure.
Tanvir Ahmed who came to the beel with his family, said:”I really enjoyed coming here with my family. My mind is filled with joy after seeing so many beautiful lotuses. But if seats are arranged to sit here, visitors can enjoy the natural beauty at length and in leisure.”
Commenting on the matter, Rowmari upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Al Imran, said: The beel has really enormous potential to attract tourists. I have asked the union parishad chairman to make the beel more attractive for tourists to enjoy. The police have also been asked to provide security to visitors.”
