The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested an electrician named Mobarak Hossain in connection to the explosion at Baitus Salat Jame Mosque in Narayanganj.
Mobarak, who had installed the power at Baitus Salat Jame Mosque, was arrested Saturday night for allegedly working on an illegal electricity connection there.
Mobarak was put on a 2-day remand after CID produced him before a court and appealed for a 5-day remand Sunday afternoon.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Narayanganj CID Inspector and newly appointed Investigation Officer, Babul Hossain said: “It was found that one of the two electricity connections discovered at the Baitus Salat Jame Mosque was illegally installed. As Mobarak did all the electrical work there, we have arrested him for questioning.”
During preliminary interrogation, Mobarak admitted to working on the illegal electricity connection over at Baitus Salat Jame Mosque before the explosion occurred on September 4.
Earlier on Saturday, eight officials and employees of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Co Ltd, who were earlier suspended in the case of a suspected gas pipeline explosion at a Narayanganj mosque, were put on a two day remand.
The eight officials and employees of the gas company were arrested from different places in Narayanganj and Dhaka earlier that day.
The eight officials and employees initially suspended and now arrested, are: managing engineer Md Sirajul Islam, deputy managing engineer Mahbudur Rahman Rabbi, assistant engineer SM Hasan Shahriar, assistant engineer Manik Miah, senior supervisor Md Munibur Rahman Chowdhury, senior development worker Md Ayub Ali, chief assistant Hanif Miah, and assistant Ismail Pradhan.
These four engineers and four other employees were based at the gas company’s Fatullah office in Narayanganj.
On September 4, more than 50 people, including women and children, were injured in an explosion during Isha prayers at the Baitus Salat Jame Mosque in West Tolla.
37 people were seriously burnt. As of Saturday, 33 people have died and one has returned home. The condition of the remaining three people is also critical.
