On September 3, assailants attacked the home of Ghoraghat UNO Wahida Khanam and left her critically injured
Rabiul Islam, whom the police had identified as the prime suspect in the attack on Wahida Khanam, upazila nirbahi officer of Ghoraghat upazila, has confessed to his involvement before a Dinajpur court.
Rabiul gave his confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Ismail Hossain Sunday afternoon.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Investigation Officer of the case, Imam Zafar, said: “After Rabiul confessed to his crime and the court recorded his statement, he was back to jail.”
The remaining suspects in the case including Asadul, Nabirul and Santu are currently in jail as well, he added.
Earlier on Thursday, Rabiul reportedly changed his statement when he was brought before the court.
He was brought to court as he had reportedly confessed to his involvement over the break-in at the government official’s residence in Dinajpur before the Detective Branch of Police (DB).
As he refused to record a confessional statement with the magistrate, investigators pleaded for a 7-day remand, and they were granted 3 days.
On September 3, assailants attacked the official residence of Ghoraghat UNO Wahida Khanam. They first tied up the doorman and broke in through the ventilators at the back of the house.
The attackers hacked Wahida indiscriminately, leaving her with critical head injuries, and went on to attack her father Ali Sheikh, 70, who had rushed in to save her.
The father and daughter were taken to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. Later, the UNO was airlifted from Rangpur to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka by a Bangladesh Air Force helicopter.
Doctors say Wahida's condition is stable now and she has been kept in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the hospital.
