Major rivers rise in Ganges basin, flow above danger mark in Brahmaputra basin

Water levels of major rivers might continue to rise during the next 24 hours at most points with a possibility of a short-term flood

Water levels in most of the rivers and tributaries in Ganges basin recorded a rising trend Friday in the wake of onrushing of floodwater from the upstream hilly catchment areas after a rising-falling trend during the previous couple of days.

Meanwhile, major rivers marked further rise to flow above the danger mark (DM) at two points slowly creating a flood-like situation inundating low-lying areas in the Brahmaputra basin during the last 24 hours till Friday morning.

Local office of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) recorded a stable trend at Pankha in Chapainawabganj and at Rajshahi points, while went up by 4cm at Hardinge Bridge and 3cm at Talbaria in Ganges River, Mukhlesur Rahman, Superintending Engineer of BWDB, told BSS this morning.

The BWDB office also recorded a rising trend at all the points of the Padma, the Mohananda, the Korotoa and the Atrai rivers afresh.

Water level in the Korotoa further went up by 6cm and 21cm at Chak Rahimpur and Bogra points respectively.

The Gur River increased by 9cm further at Singra in Natore, while the Atrai River by 17cm at Baghabari in Sirajganj.

FFWC executive engineer Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan said a rising trend has been recorded at all the six points of the Jamuna River further. The river crossed the danger level at Sariakandi in Bogra point, while flowing below the danger mark in other five points.

The water level went up by 36cm at Sariakandi, 27cm at Kazipur in Sirajganj and 32cm at Sirajganj point.

The Mahananda River also increased by 25cm and 6cm at Rohanpur and at Chapainawabganj points respectively. The Chhoto Jamuna River went up by 11cm at Naogaon and the Atrai River went up by 35cm at Mohadevpur in Naogaon and 11cm at Atrai points.

Of the 16 river points both in Ganges and Brahmaputra Basins, being monitored in many districts under Rajshahi division regularly, water levels increased at 14 points and remained stable at two points.

The rivers were flowing below the danger level in 15 points and above the danger level in one point.

During the past 24 hours, the recorded rainfalls were 210mm at Gaibandha, 112mm at Dalia, 103mm at Panchagarh, 62mm at Kurigram and 53mm at Jamalpur monitoring points of BWDB in the basin.

“The Dharla was flowing 30cm above the DM at Kurigram at 9 pm today inundating some low-lying areas under Sadar and Fulbari upazilas with sporadic erosion at places,” said Ariful Islam, executive engineer of Kurigram BWDB.

Executive Engineer of BWDB for Gaibandha division Mokhlesur Rahman said water level of the Ghagot rose by 19cm during the last 24 hours and was flowing 49cm below the DM at Gaibandha point at 9am.

Water levels of the Brahmaputra marked a rise by 5cm at Noonkhawa and 16cm at Chilmari and Jamuneswari by 116cm at Badarganj points during the last 24 hours.

Besides, water levels of the Jamuna marked sharp rises by 29cm at Fulchhari, 37cm at Bahadurabad, 36cm at Sariakandi, 27cm at Kazipur and 32cm at Sirajganj points in Sirajganj during the period.

Talking to BSS, Chief Engineer for Rangpur zone of BWDB Jyoti Prosad Ghosh said water levels of major rivers might continue to rise during the next 24 hours at most points with a possibility of a short-term flood in the basin.

Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md. Zakir Hossain today told BSS that the district administrations and authorities of BWDB are closely monitoring the situation across Rangpur division to take steps if necessary anywhere.
