The arrestee is a suspended ready-made-garment worker, sources said
Police arrested a youth for trying to rob Prime Bank’s Gazipur branch by threatening to explode a bomb to its manager.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon around 2:30pm, police confirmed.
The arrestee, Abu Bakar Siddique, 30, -- a suspended ready-made garment worker--arrived at the bank, located on the second floor of Shapla Mansion in Chandona area of Gazipur, with a black school bag and tried to loot the bank threatening the bank manager that there were bombs in his bag.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Acting Commissioner Md Azad Mia confirmed the matter.
Farid somehow managed to block the gates and contact the police over the phone, he said.
When police reached the spot, they cordoned off the area including the bank building and surrounding roads.
Police later arrested the man and seized the Improvised Exclusive Device (IED) bomb, which the Bomb Disposal Team of Dhaka Counter-Terrorism Unit and Transnational Crime (CTTC) defused afterwards.
Police further said an investigation is underway to find out whether any militant organisation is involved with the incident.
