A woman has reportedly been suffering from different abuses in the hand of her in-law's for the past 11 years for dowry in Moheshpur village of Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj.
The woman has been identified as Nargis Akter, wife of Shafiqul Islam of the area.
On Sunday night, she was severely beaten by her father-in-law and other members of her husband's family and her hair was cut short, said Ullapara police station Officer-in-Charge Dipak Kumar Das quoting locals.
After the assault she was admitted to the Sirajganj 250 Bed Bongamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital and was given first-aid.
"The woman has injury marks on different parts of her body,” said the hospital's Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Faridul Islam.
Police took the woman's father-in-law Habibur Rahman in custody and a case is yet to be filed in this connection until Tuesday afternoon, said OC Dipak.
Udhunia Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Jalil said Nargis's father Ibrahim owns a house near Habibur's house. Habibur has been pressurizing Ibrahim to transfer the house ownership to him as dowry which was refused by Ibrahim.
"Nargis and her husband Shafiqul were often tortured in the family as the house was not transferred to Habibur. Habibur even lodged robbery cases against his own son. Arbitrations were held several times to solve the issues of the family, but it had not brought any result."
The woman's husband Shafiqul said: " My father was very angry at me as I married the woman I love. Because of this my father, brother and his wife had been torturing me and my wife for the past 11 years."
