Online portal editor, 2 others sent to jail in DSA case in Barisal

Police arrested the trio when they tried to flee

An online editor and two of his associates have been sent to jail for video recording Barisal City Corporation (BCC) mayor and his family without permission. 

Mamunur Rashid Nomani, editor of a local online news portal “Barisaler Khabor,” his associates Kamrul Mridha and Labu Gazi were sent to jail in a case filed under the Digital Security Act on Sunday.

Barisal Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Nurul Islam said: “BCC Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, his wife and children went for a walk in Trish Godown area on the banks of the Kirtankhola River around 1am on Sunday.

“During that time, the three accused secretly recorded their videos without permission.

“As they realized this, the mayor and his family protested and the three men tried to flee. However, they were soon chased and nabbed by us,” he added.

Sheikh Syed Ahmed Manna, ward 21 councilor of BCC, who was present at the scene, filed a case against the three with Kotwali police station on Sunday morning.

The trio was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Court where the judge passed the order to send them to jail on Sunday afternoon. 

However, eyewitnesses said the three accused were beaten and injured by associates of the ward councilor while they were being arrested in Trish Godown area.
