The man had not used his NID card since 2014, that’s why we assumed him to be dead, said an officer of the election commission office
Nazrul Islam, a physically challenged man, who went to the local union parishad to check his information, found out that he had been assumed to be dead by the office and all his documents were scratched on account of that assumption.
The incident created mistrust for the election officials among the locals as it is just after the NID fraud in Kushtia, alleged the residents of Meherpur’s Gangni area.
“I was informed at the office that the Election Commission’s official web portal has no information about me so far as I was presumed to be dead for a long time,” said Nazrul.
However, quoting Jahangir Alam, the UP chairman of Tetulbaria, Nazrul said he applied to the Gangni election officer to collect a new National Identity Card (NID) as his previous one has been scratched out by the office.
Contacted, Kabir Uddin, an official of Meherpur Sadar upazila election commission, said that it is possible that any of the concerned personnel in the process might have missed out Nazrul’s name.
“As we have received his application on Sunday the issue will be resolved soon,” said the election officer.
He further added: “Nazrul’s NID card was last used in 2014 and remained inactive since then. That must have been the reason to assume that he is dead.”
