The investigation committee formed by the Ministry of Public Administration has started to interrogate all involved parties in the incident of illegal arrest, torture and punishment of Ariful Islam, Kurigram district correspondent of Dhaka Tribune.

The three-member probe body, led by Joint Secretary Amena Begum, arranged a meeting at the Kurigram Circuit House on Wednesday.

At the meeting, the committee heard Ariful’s recollection of the March 14 incident, which led to his arrest and a year of jail term handed by a mobile court at the Kurigram Deputy Commissioner's Office.

The meeting was attended by Rintu Bikash Chakma, executive magistrate and assistant commissioner -- who was the judge of the hearing of the mobile court, and Jilufa Sultana, additional deputy commissioner.

In his statement, Ariful Islam said: “I was tortured, arrested and charged with a criminal offence that night, out of personal rivalry. I have no grudges towards the defendants. I have full respect towards the nation’s jurisdiction and I know justice will be served irrespective of the defendants’ positions.”

Afterwards, asked by the probe body, Rintu Bikash Chakma supported Ariful’s claim and stated that he had no question against his remarks, confirmed the probe body and DC office sources.

On March 14, a mobile court of Kurigram district administration, led by the three assistant commissioners, convicted and sentenced Ariful, the Kurigram correspondent Dhaka Tribune and Bangla Tribune, to one-year imprisonment after he was arrested from his home on charges of possessing narcotics.

Earlier the same night, Ariful and his family members were about to go to sleep when some Ansar members, accompanied by assistant commissioners Nazim Uddin, Rintu Bikash Chakma and Rahatul Islam, forced into their home and tortured Ariful. Later around 1:30am on March 14, Ariful was sent to jail.
