Police have arrested a local journalist in Bogra in a case filed over the rape of a college-going girl.
Ahasan Habib Atik was arrested in the town’s Charmatha area on Monday night after the victim’s mother filed a case with Sadar police station.
Atik is the staff reporter of the Bogra based daily ‘Mahasthan’ and joint secretary of Kahalu Press Club.
Confirming the arrest on Tuesday, Bogra Sub-town police outpost Sub-Inspector Rahim Uddin said: “Atik has been sent to jail following a court order.”
“The college girl has made a statement under Section 22 of the Women and Children Repression Act in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Supriya Rahman. Medical examinations of the victim have also been done,” he added.
According to the case statement, Ahasan Habib Atik developed a relationship with the girl through phone connection. The girl lives in the town’s Khandar area. Atik had been harassing the girl in various ways.
On January 5, when the girl was on her way to a coaching centre in the Jaleswari area, Atik took the girl to Century Motel located in the Charmatha area in a private car and raped her there at around 11:30am.
Upon returning home, the girl disclosed everything to her father. But they remained silent in order to save the honour of the family.
At one point, Atik proposed marrying the girl, informing her family of his intention. When the family rejected the proposal, Atik threatened and harassed them.
Besides, Atik had some intimate photos with which he tried to blackmail the victim’s family.
