Around 40 people armed with sticks and sharp weapons swooped upon them suddenly

Update : 24 Aug 2020, 05:58 PM

Around 20 people sustained injuries when miscreants attacked a human chain program in Chittagong on Monday.

Children of freedom fighters under the banner of Chittagong Zila Muktijoddha Sangsad Santan Command had organized the program as a freedom fighter of Banshkhali upazila was laid to rest without state honours.

The clash took place around 11:30am on the Chittagong Press Club premises.

Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad (BMS) held the followers of Awami League lawmaker from Chittagong 16 (Banshkhali) Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury responsible for the attack.

Commander Mozaffar Ahmed of BMS Chittagong district unit command told Dhaka Tribune that around 40 people armed with sticks and sharp weapons swooped upon them suddenly.

“10 participants of the human chain program sustained injuries during the assault. Such an attack during the month of mourning is both dastardly and cowardly. We will lodge a case in connection with the attack,” said the freedom fighter.

Nobel Chakma, assistant commissioner (Kotwali) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), said four people have been arrested in connection to the incident.

BMS has announced a rally to protest the attack on the Chittagong Press Club premises on Tuesday.

A probe committee has been formed to investigate why the freedom fighter was laid to eternal rest without state honours in Chittagong’s Banshkhali upazila.

Freedom fighter Dr Ali Ashraf was the commander of Shekherkhil union unit Muktijoddha Sangsad.

Ashraf was also the labour affairs secretary of Banshkhali upazila Awami League and elder brother of Moulavi Syed, one of the few who protested the killing of Bangabandhu in 1975.
