Juvie killings: Legal notice seeks 50L compensation for victims’ families

A legal notice was served on Thursday seeking Tk50 lakh in compensation for each of the families of the three teenagers, who were killed at the Jessore Juvenile Development Centre (JDC) on August 13.

Shanjid Siddique, a lawyer, served the legal notice to the authorities concerned, on behalf of the guardians of the three juveniles.

He also asked the authorities to take necessary steps in resolving all the problems in all the JDCs of the country by August 24.

Secretaries to the ministries of home and social welfare, director general of the Directorate of Social Service, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Jessore, and assistant director and probation officer of Jessore Juvenile Correction Centre were made respondents to the legal notice.

Roka Miah, father of deceased inmate Parvez Hasan Rabbi, Md Nannu, deceased Nayeem's father, and Saiful Islam Nantu, Russel's elder brother, collectively served the legal notice through their lawyer, Shanjid Siddique, via email.

Stricter action would be taken against the respondents if they fail to take action by August 24, the notice stated. 

In an attack carried out on August 13 by JDC officials, three juvenile inmates — Parvez Hasan Rabbi, 18, Rasel alias Sujon, 18, and Nayeem Hossain, 17, — were reportedly tortured to death with fifteen others left injured.
