The intern doctors at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) have gone on an indefinite strike since Thursday night protesting against assault on their fellows.
Earlier, two groups of intern doctors engaged in clashes in phases.
Protesting the assault, one group of doctors brought out a procession and staged a sit-in on the college campus on Friday.
According to information provided by the CMCH, some 1,900 patients are now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Also, according to the CMCH Intern Doctors’ Association, currently 86 intern doctors are on duty at the hospital.
The patients will suffer immensely if the strike continues amid the coronavirus situation.
Dr Md Habibur Rahman, joint secretary of CMCH Intern Doctors’ Association told Dhaka Tribune they would continue their work abstention program until the attackers are brought to book.
“A group of students identifying themselves as Chhatra League activists with the help of some outsiders launched an attack on us. Convener of the association Dr Osman Gani and Literary Secretary of CMC Chhatra Sangshad Sunny Hasnain received grievous injuries during the attack and they are now undergoing treatment at the hospital,” said Dr Rahman, adding that they lodged a case with Chawkbazar police station in connection with the attack.
Dr Aftabul Islam, deputy director of CMCH told Dhaka Tribune that they are taking necessary steps so that the patients do not suffer due to the strike.
“The CMCH director has already called a negotiation meeting at his office where the two groups are likely to attend. Hopefully, there will be an amicable solution to the issue,” said the CMCH deputy director.
