The authorities also asked people in these areas to maintain social distancing while staying in the shelters because of the coronavirus pandemic

Thousands of households in Chittagong hills are at risk of landslides as the situation is getting worse due to the recent incessant rains.

Meanwhile, the local administration has launched an awareness campaign in the port city, making announcements through public address systems so that people leave the areas prone to landslides.

The District Administration on Wednesday asked the residents of its nine risky hill areas about possible landslides which could take their lives.

In order to prevent casualties, authorities also decided to evacuate the people residing in these risky hill pockets as soon as possible. In this regard, they have opened 19 shelter centers in Chandgaon, Bakalia, Agrabad and Kattli circles of the port city.

The authorities also asked people in these areas to maintain social distancing while staying in the shelters because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The authorities carried out continued miking through loudspeakers since morning from nine separate spots including Motijharna, Batali Hill, Ak Khan Pahar, Tankir Pahar, Amin Jute Mills area, Raufabad Hill, Khulshi Hill, Pahartali Hill, Fayez Lake, Akbar Shah Area Lake-1,2,3 Area Hills, Mujib Nagar and Kaibalyadham.

They have also asked the residents of these risky hilly areas to leave their makeshift houses, as Chittagong and its adjoining areas have been experiencing heavy rains for the third consecutive day.

The activities of the shelter centers are being conducted by six assistant commissioners, in charge of six circles of the city, and the district’s relief and rehabilitation officer. Adequate stocks of dry foods and clean water have been kept there for the people who come to take shelter.

Touhidul Islam, executive magistrate of the district administration, said the district administration has started various activities since Thursday morning to evacuate the people as there is a fear of landslides caused by heavy rains.

Torrential rains that continued since last Sunday night reached an extreme form on Thursday. It hit civic life and business activities hard  in the port city and its adjacent districts.

People from low income groups, mostly the rickshaw pullers and day labourers, made temporary settlements and started to live in those risky hills despite knowing the ensuing dangers, the district administration sources said.

Some employees of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) directed by its Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin have been miking since Thursday morning through loudspeakers and asked residents in all nine hilly areas to move to safer places.
