Prior to the alleged gunfight in Brahmanbaria, two police officers tried to nab the drug dealer on Friday, when he stabbed one of the cops to death
Two suspected drug dealers have been killed in alleged gunfights with the Rapid Action Battalion and police in Brahmanbaria and Cox’s Bazar on Monday.
In Brahmanbaria, a suspected drug dealer, also accused of stabbing a police officer to death, has been killed in a reported gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The deceased Mamun Miya was accused in cases filed for narcotics dealing, illegal arms possession, and planning for robbery.
The gunfight took place around 3:30am when Mamun was chatting with his associates in an abandoned stall at Chandpur market in Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila, informed Chandan Debnath, squad commander and deputy chief of RAB-14 Bhairab camp.
Acting on a tip-off, RAB conducted a drive at the area and, realizing the presence of the law enforcers, Mamun and his associates opened fire. This prompted RAB to retaliate and triggered a gunfight, according to the RAB officer.
After the gunfight, RAB took the severely injured Mamun to Brahmanbaria Sadar hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, the RAB officer further informed.
RAB recovered a foreign-made pistol, four rounds of bullets, and a knife from the spot.
On Friday, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Hossain and ASI Moni Shankar Chakma of Brahmanbaria Sadar police station went on a raid at Chandpur market to arrest Mamun, as he was accused in different cases.
Mamun attacked both the officers with a knife due to which ASI Amir died and ASI Moni Shankar has been currently undergoing treatment at the Brahmanbaria hospital, according to Imtiaz Ahmed, officer-in-charge of special department of Brahmanbaria police.
On the day of the stabbing incident, police arrested Mamun's brother Ismail Hossain, 20, and uncle Abul Hossain, for interrogation.
Police and RAB had been trying to capture Mamun since ASI Amir was killed, officer Imtiaz confirmed.
In Cox’s Bazar, a suspected yaba dealer has been killed in an alleged gunfight with the police in Khurushkul bridge area of the city.
The deceased Mizan, son of Golam Maola of Tekpara in Cox's Bazar municipality, was arrested on Friday by Benapole immegration police, said Cox's Bazar Sadar Model police station Officer-in-Charge Abu Md Shahjahan Kabir.
The gunfight took place on early Monday when Mizan was in police custody. Police took him to a raid at Khurushkul bridge area to catch other yaba dealers based on information provided by Mizan, according to OC Shahjahan.
Realizing police presence, Mizan's associates opened fire which forced police to fire back in self defence, OC Shahjahan added.
The on-duty doctor of Cox's Bazar Sadar hospital declared Mizan dead when he was taken there with bullet wounds, the OC also said.
Police recovered 10,000 pieces of yaba and a locally made rifle from the spot.
