According to locals, Lamia’s mother, Habiba Begum, went to wash the family’s clothes in the floodwaters while leaving the 1.5-year-old alone on an elevated surface. When Habiba returned to get Lamia inside their house, she could not find her and began crying for help.
Lamia’s family members rushed to the spot and later recovered the child’s dead body from the floodwaters.
Meanwhile, 8-year-old Mimi died while swimming in the floodwaters.
The flood situation in Kurigram has worsened due to the recent heavy rainfall. Around 200,000 people in altogether 400 villages under 56 unions have been marooned in the second phase of the floods, according to local Water Development Board (WDB) sources.
