Flood situation worsens in Nilphamari

The water level of Teesta may rise up to 60cm above the danger mark creating a severe flooding situation, according to WDB

Flood situation worsened in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas while Teesta has been flowing 52.60 cm above the danger mark at Nilphamari's Dalia point on Monday morning.

The Water Development Board (WDB) hoisted red alert at the Teesta barrage areas and adviced people residing near the area to evacuate, said Robiul Islam, executive engineer, of Dalia division WDB.

The water level of Teesta may rise up to 60cm above the danger mark creating a severe flooding situation, according to WDB.

Tepa Kharibari Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Moinul Haque said incessant rain for the past three days have left around 5,000 people of Dimla and Jaldhaka upazila marooned and around 20,000 were forced to evacuate.

In these upazilas, vast areas of farmland planted with different crops has been inundated and fishes of many enclosures were washed away.

Dimla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Joysree Rani Roy UNO said: "A monitoring team had been formed with all administrative officials of the upazila. Local leaders are closely monitoring their respective areas.”

Altogether 61.77 metric tons of rice, Tk158,000 in cash and 700 packets of dried food have been allocated for the flood affected people in the district. "The distribution will begin very soon and enough relief is in stock for the flood affected people, said UNO Joysree.
