Around 28,000 people of 12 unions in four upazilas of Lalmonirhat are still marooned while the flood situation worsened once again due to the water level rise of Teesta and Dharla in Lalmonirhat.

Heavy rains and hill waters from India, upstream from Bangladesh triggered the water level rise on Sunday, while people of Aditmari, Kaliganj, Hatibandha, and Sadar upazilas have remained marooned for the past three days.

On Sunday, Dharla was flowing 45cm above its danger mark at Shimulbari point of Mogolhat area in Lalmonirhat Sadar. Low lying areas of Mogolhat and Kulaghat unions of these upazila were flooded  once again, according to sources from the Water Development Board.

Teesta had been flowing 25cm above the danger mark on Sunday afternoon and all gates of the barrage were kept open due to the pressure of water upstream of the dam.

Hamizon Nesa, 58, and Azizul Islam, 65, are among those marooned in Aditmari upazila. They said relief goods were not provided to them despite the fact that they were marooned for three days.

Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Md Abu Zafor said: "To aid the marooned people in the district, 120 metric tons of GR (Gratuitous Relief) rice and Tk2 lakh in cash has been allocated."
