The diagnostic centre owner was sent to jail following his arrest on Thursday
Rooppur nuclear power plant construction project authority has made it mandatory for its workers and employees to get tested for the coronavirus (Covid-19) and submit certificates amidst the rising number of infected workers at the project.
“Ruppur Medicare”, a private diagnostic centre in Pakshi union under Pabna's Ishwardi upazila, used the sudden rise in demand for Covid-19 tests among Rooppur nuclear power plant construction workers and pocketed over Tk8 lakh from the unsuspecting clients.
Police on Thursday arrested Abdul Wahab Rana, 40, the owner of the diagnostic centre, on charges of fraudulence. Rana has been collecting samples from suspected Covid-19 patients, without acquiring prior permission required from the health department.
Ishwardi police station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Md Nasir Uddin said Rana has been sent to jail following a court order on Thursday.
“Rana, the owner of Medicare, collected samples for the coronavirus test from 160 workers of Rooppur project, charging them a staggering fee of Tk5,000 each. Rana’s aide in this scam has been identified as, Sujan Ahmed, of Baraigram upazila in Natore.
“Rana and Sujan pitched tents at the brickfield in Rooppur Market area and collected samples for Covid-19 tests. They lied to most of the clients saying the samples were sent to Brahmanbaria Medical College Hospital for testing,” said the OC.
When contacted, Brahmanbaria Medical College Hospital Chairman Abu Saeed said that they sent back reports of 50 samples to Ruppur Medicare on Monday. “We have not received any more samples from that private diagnostic centre and I am unaware of whether the clinic has government approval to collect Covid-19 samples.”
Ariful Bari Kiran, director of Ruppur Medicare, claimed that at the request of some Russian contractors, they had collected samples and arranged for testing in Brahmanbaria.
