A woman has been set on fire by her husband for dowry in Nagarpur upazila’s Shahjani village of Tangail.

The homemaker, Sumi Akhter was set ablaze on Friday midnight reportedly by her husband, Abdullah Al Mamun-- suspended personnel of Bangladesh Navy-- on her way back to her in-laws’ house, family sources said.

Sumi was able to jump to an adjacent pond to save herself and suffered 60% burn injuries, said locals who rescued and took her to the Tangail General Hospital after the incident.

Mother of the victim filed a case with Delduar police station on Sunday accusing three people, police confirmed.

The accused are Sumi’s husband Abdullah Al Mamun, her father-in-law Shah Jahan Sarker, and her brother-in-law Shariful Islam. Among them, the latter two were arrested early morning Monday, confirmed Nagarpur police OC Alam Chan.

“We have inspected the place and are making drives to arrest the main accused Mamun,” said the officer.

“Police made an appeal to the court for a five-day remand for each; however, the court granted one-day remand for each of them,” said Tanvir Ahmed, court inspector of Tangail.
