Rabiul Mia, 40, was nabbed by a RAB 8 team from Nurpur village, said Madaripur Camp Commander Additional SP Md Tajul Islam
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a man in Madaripur’s Rajoir upazila for his alleged involvement in human trafficking to Libya.
Rabiul Mia, 40, was nabbed by a RAB 8 team from Nurpur village, said Madaripur Camp Commander Additional SP Md Tajul Islam.
He said Rabiul belongs an international human trafficking ring, which has operatives in Bangladesh, Libya, and Italy, and generally lures people with various false temptations, including promises of well paid jobs abroad.
Their main targets are the poor and uneducated, and unemployed youth, said Additional SP Tajul. At first, they send the youths to Libya. Then they take them hostage at unknown places there and demand ransom from their families here in Bangladesh.
Whoever fails to pay the money faces torture, he said.
The gang then leaves for Italy by boat with the victims whose families have paid the ransom. The RAB learned that the traffickers even manage to collect ransom as high as Tk10 lakh.
Additional SP Tajul said Rabiul during preliminary interrogation, admitted he had ties to a human trafficking gang. His son Sajib is now in Libya who is a partner in his crimes.
There are also a number of cases against both of them at different police stations.
In May, human traffickers killed 30 migrant workers, including 26 Bangladeshi nationals in Libya, in a smuggling warehouse in Mezda near the city of Gharyan, southwest of Tripoli.
Warlord Haftar’s militiaman Khaled Al-Mishai, who was allegedly responsible for the murder of 26 Bangladeshis and four African migrants, was killed in a drone strike by the Libyan Air Force.
Following the killings, Bangladesh started a crackdown on human traffickers here.
