Police have arrested five persons, including the main accused, in a case filed in the murder of Dr Abdur Rakib Khan, who died on Tuesday after getting critically injured in a scuffle with a patient’s relatives.
The main accused Jamir, along Abul Ali, Golam Mostafa, and Khadiza were arrested in separate drives conducted in Tongi of Gazipur and Rupsa of Khulna.
They were arrested on Wednesday night, said Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandaker Lutful Kabir.
Earlier on Tuesday night, another accused, Abdur Rahim was detained. He was later shown arrested in the case.
One of the accused, Khadiza gave a confessional statement under section 164 in the court on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the court has placed another accused, Abdur Rahim on a three-day remand for interrogation.
The other three accused in the case are yet to arrive in Khulna as they were arrested from Gazipur.
SI BM Moniruzzaman, also the investigation officer of the case, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Earlier on Tuesday, Dr Rakib, director of Raisa Clinic and Diagnostic Centre in Khulna and principal of Bagerhat Medical Assistants' Training School, breathed his last while being treated for injuries received in an attack by the relatives of a patient at the Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital in the district.
On Monday night, a pregnant woman died after giving birth to a baby at his clinic, causing her relatives to bring up allegations of wrong treatment and it later led to the scuffle, said Saiful Islam, younger brother of Dr Rakib.
Saiful claimed that some relatives of the patients carried out an attack on his brother at the clinic at 8:50pm on Monday, leaving him critically injured.
He was immediately taken to Gazi Medical College and Hospital and later shifted to Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital for better treatment.
Doctors' strike suspended for 72 hours
Dr Sheikh Baharul Alam, president of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) in Khulna and vice-president of the central committee of the organization has announced the suspension of the ongoing strike of doctors for 72 hours.
The announcement was made at a press conference organized by BMA at Khulna Press Club on Thursday at 2pm.
At that time, Dr Ali said, the doctors' strike has been postponed for 72 hours considering the plight of the patients.
However, Dr Ali said all of the accused in Dr Rakib murder case have to be arrested within 72 hours and the OC of Sadar police station has to be withdrawn. Otherwise, a further protest will be announced later.
