A man has been killed and 20 others injured in a turf war in Khajura village of Jhenaidah after a clash over joining Awami League.

The deceased, Faruq Hossain, 35, was in critical condition and died while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The incident took place on Wednesday, after 35 to 40 Bangladesh Nationalist Party activists joined the ruling party Awami League the previous night through AL leader Liton, local sources said.

However, followers of Abul Hossain, leader of another group of Jhenaidah AL did not approve of the new entries and thus initiated a turf war, police say.

“We went to the place and found at least 20 people from both sides injured, two of them were in critical condition,” said Sadar police station OC Mizanur Rahman Khan.

“Additional police have been deployed to the area and eventually, we took the situation under control. Legal actions will be taken to ensure justice to Faruq,” added the OC.
