A woman was gang-raped and murdered by a man whom she refused to have a relationship with in Jhenaidah's Kaliganj upazila.
The deceased was Keya Khatun, daughter of Abdus Samad in Trilochonpur village in Kaliganj upazila.
Police arrested Milon Hosain, 26, Israfil, 25, and Azim, 26, all of Trilochonpur village in connection with the murder and rape commited.
Police uncovered the murder of the woman three months ago when her body was dug up and recovered from Dadapur village of the upazila in early March, confirmed Md Hasanuzzaman, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jhenaidah.
All of the accused were arrested at separate times over the course of the three months of a police investigation of the case. The culprits gave confessional statements in a Jhenaidah court and were sent to jail.
The principal accused, Milon, had a romantic relationship with Keya three years ago. However, her family married her off to another man which enraged him, said police.
On February 26, Milon took Keya to a field two kilometres away from her father's house in Dadapur village. Milon raped her first and his accomplices Azim and Israfil took turns in raping her afterwards.
Milon then brutally killed Keya, hitting her on the head with a stick. They buried her body in the field.
Kazi Abul Khayer, case investigation officer and sub-inspector of Kaliganj police station, said: "Following the directions of SP sir, and with help from the officer-in-charge (OC) of our police station, we were able to catch all of the accused. We arrested them with the help of technology and detectives in Jibannaagar, Kaliganj, and Dhaka."
The police station's OC, Md Mahfuzur Rahman Miya, said: "The case was actually without any clues. It's very difficult to track and find the main culprits in a case like this. But the case investigation officer worked very hard to find the three involved in the rape and murder. All of them also confessed to their crimes in court."
