The duo extorted large sums of money from family members of abducted Bangladeshi migrant workers in Libya
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Barguna has detained two active members of a human trafficking gang involved in the abduction and extortion of Bangladeshi migrant workers in Libya.
The detainees, identified as Md Sojol, 23, and Idris Ali, 26 of Nachnapara union, have confessed to their involvement with human trafficking during preliminary interrogation.
Acting on information, members of RAB 12 carried out separate drives in Patharghata upazila and detained the suspects on Tuesday.
A case is being prepared for filing with Patharghata police station, said a press release signed by RAB 12 Media Officer MMH Imran.
According to RAB sources, the detainees were involved in the abduction of two migrant workers in Libya—Md Murshid Gazi of Bagerhat Sadar and Saiful Ali of Bogra.
The abduction was carried out by Sojol’s brother Sohel, who leads the human trafficking gang in Libya. He later sent torture videos of the abductees Murshid Gazi and Saiful Ali to their family members, demanding ransom for their safe release.
Meanwhile, Sojol and Idris were the ones who collected large sums of money from the victims’ families here in Bangladesh via mobile banking.
RAB tracked down the duo through leads provided by the victims’ family members—mobile numbers and Facebook accounts used by extortionists.
The detained suspects were found to be in possession of over Tk1.26 lakh in mobile banking accounts, Tk8,100 in cash, 11 mobile phones, and 29 sim cards.
