Six foxes, one mongoose, and two fishing cats were killed
At least nine wild animals including two fishing cats were beaten to death by locals in Balipara village of Sylhet's Jaintiapur upazila on Friday morning.
Six foxes, one mongoose, and two fishing cats colloquially known as 'Baghdasha' were the victims of such painful deaths, which triggered a social media outrage as photos of their bodies, kept lined up, went viral.
The fishing cat is classified as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, as it is at high risk of extinction.
There is a dense forest near Balipara village. After a few days of flooding in the area, the foxes came to the locality and snatched away a few ducks and roosters.
Agitated by the incident, local youths gathered on Friday and launched an attack in the forest near the village, said Sylhet Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sajjad Hossain, quoting the local union parishad chairman.
The DFO on Friday said he is set to visit the forest on Saturday morning and take further actions after an investigation into the matter.
