Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has urged the government to ensure justice for Delwar Hossain, an executive engineer of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), who was murdered for standing up to corruption.
They also asked the authorities concerned to bring those responsible for this murder to justice through a proper investigation and compensate Delwar’s family in a fair way.
A statement was issued to the media in this regard on Tuesday.
Mentioning that Delwar’s killing was premeditated by corrupt co-workers and the corrupt contractors working at the GCC, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said: “The government has to ensure exemplary punishment for the culprits who took advantage of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic to brutally murder Delwar.
“If the government fails to ensure justice for the victim here, then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s zero-tolerance policy against corruption will come under question. Despite the efforts of the law enforcement agencies to quickly identify and arrest those directly involved in the killing, none has yet been brought under the law.”
“We think that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), without showing any fear, should immediately identify those who are corrupt, regardless of how powerful they are or what influential quarter they belong to.”
Earlier on May 11, police recovered Delwar's body, bearing head injuries, from Diabari Beribadh area under Turag police station.
Family members later identified his body at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue in Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Delwar was preparing to go to the office that morning in the office vehicle which he used everyday. But that day, a new car and a new driver had picked him up from his Mirpur house.
He was later found dead in that same vehicle. His family filed a murder case the same day with Turag police station.
Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) then detained four people in connection with the murder. However, some other suspects have also gone into hiding.
