Seeking anonymity, a number of locals alleged that some local influentials from Nanikhir union council chairman's family are involved in 'casino business' in the area.

Many became addicts and went bankrupt as they had been gambling and taking drugs in 'the mini-casino' of the rice mill in Jolirpar market of the upazila, said the locals.

The rice mill is owned by Nanikhir Union Parishad chairman Asaduzzaman Minar Zaman.

However, Al-Amin Mina, younger brother of the union council chairman, said: "Only rice trade is operated at the mill. Sometimes people play cards here, no drug or casino business. Our political rivals are spreading lies to undermine us."
