The main accused of a case over the rape of two cousins was killed in a reported gunfight in Chittagong on early Monday.

Two more people accused in the rape case were arrested during the drive at the district’s Andarmanik village of Bhujpur under Fatikchhari upazila, reports BSS.

Moreover, a gun, a knife, and four bullets were also recovered from the spot, confirmed police.

The deceased was identified as Md. Helal Uddin, 30, son of Zafar Alam of Andarmanik village of West Bhujpur area.

Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhujpur police station, said that there were several cases filed against the deceased.

SM Rashidul Hoque, superintendent of police (SP) of Chittagong district, said that a group of miscreants led by Helal abducted two cousins on their way back from Kazirhat Bazar of Bhujpur around 11am on Saturday and took them to the forest in Andharmanik Galachipar Tek area.

“Ten people raped the cousins and left them there unconscious and a case was filed with the Bhujpur police station in this connection,” he added.

“According to the confession made by Helal, police launched an operation to arrest the rest accused involved in the murder,” Rashidul said.

“We conducted a drive at the Andharamanik Galachipar Tek area with Helal when suddenly Helal’s followers opened fire on us. We fired back self-defence, which triggered a gunfight around 3am on Monday,” he said.

“Helal got injured during the gunfight. We took him to Fatichari Upazila Health Complex where duty doctors declared him dead,” the SP added.

Later, police arrested two more accused after raiding spot confessed area, said police sources.
