The victims, consisting mostly of young men and children, were headed home ahead of Eid
A truck lost control and fell into a ditch in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha, killing at least 13 people, who were returning to their village homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr holidays with their families.
The incident took place on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway in Jundah area Thursday morning.
The deceased were identified as Mohsin Miya, 23, Imran Miya, 22, Abdul Hannan, 18, Monirul Islam, 20, Md Ershad, 35, his sons Md Obaidul, 8, and Md Akash, 15, Md Al Amin, 17, Isahak Khan, 14, Shariful Islam, 30, Md Mizanur, 27, Shamsul Alam, 65, and his grandson Soyeb, 7.
The victims were riding on a tarpaulin-covered iron rod laden truck to hide from police as they headed for their hometowns violating government-imposed travel ban.
“The truck suddenly lost control and fell into a ditch, killing all passengers on board on the spot, said Palashbari police station OC Masudur Rahman.
"Heavy wind brought about by the cyclone Amphan was prevailing during the time of the accident Thursday morning," he added.
