The men caught a monkey, who had come to the village for food, and strangulated him to death with an iron chain
Officials of Moulvibazar Forest Department have filed a case against three people who reportedly strangulated a monkey to death in Comilla Para village of Sreemangal upazila.
The accused, Saheb Ali, Jamal Miah, and Kuddus Miah caught a monkey--who had come to the village collect food on March 31-- and strangulated the poor animal with an iron chain, forest department sources said.
The three allegedly recorded a video of the incident which they published from their Facebook and it went viral, raising concerns among netizens and locals.
“We filed a case under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act in Moulvibazar Court on April, 5. But as most of the court operations were halted during the coronavirus lockdown, the court took the case into cognizance on Sunday,” said Monayem Hossain, range officer of the district forest department.
“We hope the court handles the matter with priority and conforms to proper justice to prohibit cruelty to animals,” the official added.
