Prisoners freed from Jamalpur jail: Fourteen prisoners, who were booked for minor offences, were released from Jamalpur District Jail yesterday. Jamalpur Jail Superintendent Md Moklesur said the prisoners were freed following the instruction of the Home Ministry in order to curb the spread of coronavirus among inmates. As of yesterday, a total of 16 prisoners were freed from the jail. Currently, the prison houses 481 inmates against its capability of housing 331 inmates.

20 injured in Chapainawabganj clash: At least 20 people were injured in a clash that occurred over a land dispute between two groups in Lalkopra village of Gomostapur upazila yesterday. Seven among the injured are currently undergoing treatment at Gomostapur Upazila Health Complex, said the hospital's duty-doctor Dr Nusrat Faria. Gomostapur police station OC Jashim Uddin said one Md Imrul and his rival Jalal Uddin of Boalia union had been in a long-standing dispute over land ownership.

Thief flees with handcuffs on, four policemen closed in Khagrachhari: Four policemen were closed and attached to the Khagrachhari police lines on Thursday reportedly for their negligence of duty as a thief fled from a hospital under their watch. The alleged thief, Erako Chakma, was injured and taken to the Sadar Hospital after he received a mob-beating by locals on Wednesday, said police sources. "Irresponsible behaviour wouldn’t be tolerated in the service and an investigation will be conducted soon over the matter," said Superintendent of Khagrachhari Police Abdul Aziz.

2 detained with firearms, yaba: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained two people with firearms and drugs in Pabna and Rajshahi on Thursday. The detained are Abdur Razzak, 35, and Kohinur Sheikh, 26. Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team conducted a drive at Uttar Machhimpur area, of Pabna Sadar upazila and detained Abdur Razzak with a foreign-made revolver, says a press release signed by Company Commander Aminul Kabir Tarafdar of RAB-11. RAB detained Kohinur Sheikh with 500 pieces of yaba pills from Uttar Milik area in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi.

RAB busts counterfeit medicine factory in Nilphamari: RAB seized huge amounts of counterfeit medicines from a factory and the factory owner's residence in Syedpur upazila in Nilphamari. A mobile court sentenced the factory owner, Atiar Rahman, 45, to a year in prison on Thursday, reports Bangla Tribune. Tipped-off, RAB 13 and RAB 14 conducted a raid at Messers Rexton Laboratories at Mahbuba Plaza in Niamatpur area of the upazila and seized the medicines.
Man hacked to death in Dinajpur: A man was hacked to death by unknown assailants in Birol upazila on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Kobad Ali. His brother Abed Ali said being informed by locals they found Kobad's body on a road at Dodhiyabari area. Kobad was on his way home from prayer around 10:30pm when assailants used sharp weapons to kill him, Abed furthered. Birol police station OC Sheikh Nasim Habib said the body will be sent for an autopsy.

Committee formed for BSMRSTU students' house-rent commission: A five member committee of teachers was formed for the arrangement of a house-rent commission system for the students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University (BSMRSTU). The ongoing countrywide shutdown has left many students without income which they would earlier earn from tutoring. The five member committee of teachers will work on policy making, and its implementation to arrange a commission system for the house rent of students living in mess and apartments, according to a press release issued on Thursday by Md Morad Hossain, deputy registrar of the university.
