The owner of the godown is still unknown but the local administration has fingered a local bigwig as the culprit
Local administration officials have recovered 1,200 sacks of government relief rice from an abandoned garment factory storage warehouse in Bandar, Narayanganj.
Officials of the upazila administration led by UNO Shukla Sarker had made a drive to a Nit composite godown of a garment factory in Madanpur's Keodala area on Wednesday night around 10pm, said the UNO office.
"The owner of the godown is still unknown but we have information that Javed Bhuiyan, general secretary of Madanpur union Jubo League illegally hoarded rice to sell it on the black market," said UNO Shukla Sarker.
When contacted, Jubo League leader Javed rejected the allegation, and his employees said that they were storing the relief rice to donate it to underprivileged people.
Considering the claims, the UNO has sealed the godown until Javed's intentions with the rice clears up through an investigation, the UNO office said.
"We will carry out an investigation to know whether the rice was from the government or privately owned. If any discrepancies are found, legal action will be taken against the man," said the UNO.
Bandar Police OC Rafikul Islam confirmed the incident.
