'When local farmers and labourers rushed in to greet the ministers the social distancing regulations were compromised'
Ministers and regional lawmakers and several other government officials have failed to maintain social distancing measures at the inauguration programs of paddy procurement and handover of harvesting machines in Sunamganj.
Numerous locals, including farmers and labourers, working in the haors of Shantiganj thronged to greet the Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque and Planning Minister MA Mannan Wednesday morning.
While the ministers were observing farmers gathering their harvests and taking part in the process as well, they seemingly forgot to ensure the social distancing measures.
Dr Abdur Razzaque said bumper yields have been achieved in paddy cultivation this year and irregularities will not be tolerated in the procurement of paddy.
“Government will buy paddy directly from farmers. We are making a list of small and marginal farmers and paddy will be bought through a lottery," the agriculture minister said.
The minister also handed over the keys of harvester machines to two farmers in the region, while police failed to disperse the over enthused crowds violating physical distancing.
During the program, Sunamganj 5 MP Muhibur Rahman Manik, Sunamganj 1 MP Moazzem Hossain Ratan, Sunamganj 4 MP Pir Fazlur Rahman Misbah, and reserved women's seat 21 MP Shamima Akter Khanam among others were present.
Sunamganj 5 MP Muhibur Rahman Manik said: “We are well aware of the social distancing rules and always maintain them while we are out on the field helping farmers collect the harvest. But when local farmers and labourers rushed in to greet the ministers, the social distancing regulations were compromised. We attempted to control the crowd from gathering at the field but failed to fully execute it.”
