A large ship carrying about 382 Rohingya refugees washed up on the docks in Baharchara union under Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar around 8pm on Wednesday.
All of these Rohingyas, residents of Ukhiya-Teknaf refugee camps, had made sail for Malaysia two months ago but had to turn back after failing to make port there.
Informed, Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued the Rohingyas from the Jahazpur Ghat Wednesday night, confirmed Lt Cdr M Sohel Rana, of Teknaf Station Coast Guard.
Md Jobair, one of the rescued Rohingya, said a total of 382 Rohingyas sailed for Malaysia some two months ago but had to turn back because of the hard and fast restriction in place there due to the recent coronavirus pandemic. “Since then, we were adrift on the sea and without food or water some 28 people had died on the boat.”
