According to the local agriculture department, this year’s harvest season will begin from April 15 in all the haor areas of Sylhet.

Since farmers lost their crops to the floods in 2017, Boro fields in Sylhet have yielded good harvests the past two years. Farmers are also expecting a good harvest this year with ripe crops in abundance on wetlands in haor areas throughout the division.

However, farmers are still fearful they may fail to bring home all their hard earned golden harvest due to a labour shortage in this lockdown across different parts of the country and a transport halt, following the coronavirus outbreak.

According to the local agriculture department, this year’s harvest season will begin from April 15 in all the haor areas of Sylhet.

This year Boro has been cultivated on 474,195 hectares across the division, with the highest cultivation in Sunamganj on 219,300 hectares.

The department has set a production target of 1,860,000 tons of rice from Sylhet this year and they believe the target is achievable.

Kausar Chowdhury, from Dirai upazila of Sunamganj, said: “We are anxious to harvest our crops this year! Especially because we are expecting a good yield. But all the farmers are stuck at home. I don’t know how we’ll manage to harvest all our crops.”

Jamshed Ali, of Balaganj upazila of Sylhet, said: “I am expecting a good yield this year due to government incentives and support from the agriculture department.

“But, I am worried if I’ll be able to harvest all my crops in time with the shortage of workers in this countrywide shutdown.”

Sylhet Agricultural Extension Department Additional Director Sree Nibash Debnath said: “I have visited the largest haors in the division and have found the Boro paddy to be of good quality and free of disease or rot.

“Farmers need not worry about their harvest this year. A combined harvest machine has already been allocated to Bishambharpur upazila in Sunamganj. Also, there are enough workers to help with the harvest. workers from outside the district will also aid in the harvest following local administration guidelines.”
